Blackfish (2013)

This award-winning documentary takes a look at the captivity of orca whales through one particular whale, Tilikum, following the death of trainer Dawn Brancheau. Blackfish traces Tilikum’s capture at age two in 1983 to the present, and how his captivity and harassment by other orcas have contributed to his growing aggression – and ultimately the psychosis that he lives with. The impassioned film prompted massive changes at SeaWorld culminating in the phasing out of live orca performances beginning in 2016.
