Shailene Woodley

Shailene Woodley's quick rise and fall as the next "It" girl in Hollywood can seemingly be tied to major studios' attempts at trying to make her the next Jennifer Lawrence. With a steady fanbase coming from the TV series The Secret Life of the American Teenager and critically well-received roles in the films The Descendants and The Spectacular Now, it was time to test her out in two potential franchises. First would be a film adaptation of the Veronica Roth novel Divergent. It was Hollywood trying to capitalize on the dystopian sci-fi sub-genre of Young Adult novels that took off, thanks to the runaway success of The Hunger Games. Although the film wasn't as big a success, it performed well enough to warrant two sequels. However, that's as good as things would get for Woodley, as her second attempt at a franchise wouldn't even see the light of day. She was cast as the iconic Mary Jane Watson in Mark Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but had her role cut from the film for future installments that were eventually shelved. The following two installments in The Divergent Series (Insurgent and Allegiant) each saw diminishing returns, with Allegiant Part 2 eventually being scrapped. Woodley is still young enough and talented enough to turn things around, but only without studio interference.
