Frida (2002)

This film tracks the story of feminist icon and self-portrait artist Frida Kahlo, played by Salma Hayek, and her larger-than-life husband Diego Rivera. The couple were known in their native Mexico as passionate lovers and dazzling artists, and this movie, artfully directed by Julie Taymor, breathes life into their vibrant relationship. Salma was nominated for an Oscar, but lost to Nicole Kidman for her work in The Hours.

Side note: One of Frida’s nieces was so impressed with the film and Salma’s performance that she gave the actress a necklace that once belonged to her aunt.
