The Godfather

Francis Ford Coppola's mobster masterpiece The Godfather is considered a seminal work in cinema and it's no surprise it overtook the other nominees (Cabaret, Deliverance, The Emigrants and Sounder) for the Best Picture Oscar at the 1973 Academy Awards. With a total of 11 nominations, the film also took home the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as Best Actor for Marlon Brando. Famously, Brando did not attend to accept the award, choosing instead to have Native American actress, Sacheen Littlefeather, represent him and call attention to what he believed was the unfair treatment of Native Americans in the entertainment industry.
