Johnny Depp in The Lone Ranger

In this 2013 film based on the radio series of the same name, Johnny Depp played the role of Tonto, a Native American. This sparked a lot of controversy, because for years Native Americans were played by whites with darkened skin and phony accents in westerns. However, Depp defended himself, explaining his great-grandmother "was quite a bit of Native American, she grew up Cherokee or maybe Creek Indian."
