Rooney Mara in Pan

In the 2015 movie Pan, adapted from the classic stage play Peter Pan, or the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, Rooney played Tiger Lily. Tiger Lily is Native American, although throughout the years she has rarely, if ever, been played by a Native American. Mara is of European and French-Canadian descent, and for this reason the production was accused of “whitewashing” and “redface.” The most challenging part of the controversy for the young actress was the Twitter hashtag #NotYourTigerlily, which was created to protest the lack of Native American actresses.
