Swiss Army Man (2016) – Fantasy, Drama and Comedy

Few debut features are as weird as Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Swiss Army Man. Even fewer wear that weirdness as a badge of honor to great success. Given that this film is about a failed suicide and a man befriending a do-it-all corpse, the bizarreness of its premise and tone make it apparent that this film experiments across multiple genres, with humor being the one through line to make it all work. With fully committed performances by Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe, their journey falls in line with the unlikely friendship narrative that many films use, but the end result is something entirely unique.
