Heat (1995) / L.A. Takedown (1989)

Very rarely do directors take a chance to remake their own projects, but in 1995 Michael Mann did just that with his classic police film Heat. A direct remake of his 1989 TV movie L.A. Takedown, Mann was able to take what he had learned in the years since and apply it to this remake, which helped make it an instant classic. With the added budget and star power afforded to him for Heat, Mann was able to make one of the definitive films of the decade and one that continues to influence films of today, such as 2018’s Den of Thieves.
