True Grit

The Coen Brothers' adaptation of the Henry Hathaway western of the same name holds the distinction of being one of the few films in history to have an Oscar-winning performance (John Wayne in the original) be re-imagined by another actor (Jeff Bridges in the remake) and have equally Oscar-worthy results produced. Though Bridges did not manage to take home the gold statue, his nomination was accompanied by nine others, making the Coens' remake the runner-up for number of nominations that year. The 2010 version hews fairly close to the original material, opting to keep things exactly the way they were, but where it really shines is in the gorgeous production design and acting - not just Bridges, but co-stars Matt Damon and Hailee Steinfeld, who was also nominated for her work.

    – Nice look at SOME of the best remakes (adaptations?), though by no means complete. Here are a few others:
    – Ben Hur (1959), the great Oscar-Winner, as per the original silent in the 20’s (also very good).
    – Down and Out in Beverly Hills (Original: Boudu Saved From Drowning).
    – Cape Fear (1993, I think). Well directed, less innocent take by Martin Scorsese on the early 60’s original.
Always fun when the remakes work; they often don’

For ‘Casino Royale’, it is not fair to make a comparison because they were two completely diferent films. The first on with David Niven and Peter Sellers is a classic comedy, while the one with Daniel Craig is a more serious take on the James Bond movies. I loved both!!!

I never saw the original ‘Departed’, so I have nothing to compare it to, however I loved the remake!!!

What can I say? I love vampire movies, but this one was a little long in the tooth for me. I saw the orginal which was also slow but still it was much, much better than the remake! You know you’re in trouble when you keep looking at the time to see how much longer the film will be!!!!
