First Middle Eastern actor to be nominated

Widely considered one of modern cinema's most influential films, Lawrence of Arabia was nominated for the most awards to date in 1963 — 10 in total — including Best Director (David Lean) and Best Picture. Among its many nominations, Egyptian actor Omar Sharif was considered for Best Supporting Actor, but lost to Ed Begley (Sweet Bird of Youth).
