Dick Halloran in The Shining (1980)

As the Torrance family patriarch Jack (Jack Nicholson) descends into madness thanks to an unseen demonic force at the Overlook Hotel, wise (and conveniently telepathic) hotel chef Dick Halloran (Scatman Crothers) looks to be the only one who can help little Danny Torrance (Danny Lloyd) and his mom Wendy (Shelley Duvall). After receiving a premonition that Danny is in serious danger, Dick returns from Florida to save them from the murderous Jack. The heroic Dick fights off a brutal snowstorm to reach the remote hotel, and barely 10 seconds after he gains entry into the building, Jack runs up and mercilessly shoves an ax into his chest.
