Marion Crane in Psycho (1960)

Have you ever felt a strange fear of shower curtains? Like, anytime you’re in a washroom, you make sure to peek around, just in case there’s something hiding behind them? This scene in Psycho may be the reason why. After stealing $40,000 from her employer and skipping town, Marion (Janet Leigh) hits a gnarly rainstorm and decides to stay the night at the Bates Motel. Following a weird encounter with the owner, Norman Bates, Marion goes back to her room to take a shower. It’s important to point out that Leigh was one of the most in-demand actresses at the time and was touted as the star of the film, so pretty much no one expected her to be stabbed to death mid-rinse by Bates dressed as his mentally ill mother. And at the 30-minute mark, no less.
