Cracking the upper half of the Best Picture winners is Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). Director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s ambitious dramedy is best remembered for the illusion of being done in a single take, thanks to some clever cuts that hide where clips were stitched together. The film also marked a triumphant return for actor Michael Keaton as a leading man in Hollywood. The film worked as a pseudo-meta commentary on his own career, with Birdman substituting his iconic turn as Batman, while reminding audiences of the kind of powerhouse performance that Keaton is still capable of delivering.
