Ben-Hur (2016) / Ben-Hur (1959)

Ben-Hur (2016) and its 1959 predecessor were both based on the 1880 novel of the same name, although the 1959 movie was also a remake of the 1925 silent film Ben-Hur: A Tale of Christ. One of the most famous scenes in the 1959 film, which is over three hours, is the chariot race between the title character and his old friend. The cinematography was epic and being the most expensive film at that time at around $130 million by today's standards, Ben-Hur (1959) is still widely revered as a piece of movie history. Because of that, a remake felt unnecessary. And the remake proved to be just that, because of the grand ambitions it could not live up to. At two hours long, the detailed plot that played out with a slow burn in the 1959 film felt rushed. Along with bad editing, less than exceptional effects, and the iconic chariot race turning more violent than necessary, it is thus safe to say that the original reigns supreme.
