The Mummy (2017) / The Mummy (1999)

Mummies have graced our screens for over a century as wildly entertaining and monstrous villains imbued with supernatural powers from the tomb. Yet as technological advances dictate how those mummies are portrayed, we have seen a departure from the original villain in 1932's The Mummy, which was a Boris Karloff classic. In 1999, The Mummy was remade with Brendan Fraser leading the cast. The flick was an overall hit and a charming foray into 1930s Egypt, mixing aspects of fun and horror. It also paid homage to Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones. In contrast, The Mummy (2017) took place in present day. Starring Tom Cruise, the film was meant to inspire a new Dark Universe. However, the film suffered from inexperienced direction, heavy CGI, and a plot that made little sense.
