Beauty and the Beast (2017) – $504M

After spending a few years reimagining a few of their Disney classics with 2010’s Alice in Wonderland and 2014’s Maleficent, the House of Mouse began their live-action remakes in earnest with Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella in 2015 and 2016’s The Jungle Book, directed by Jon Favreau. Despite being adaptations of older films in their catalog, the films brought in over $201 and $364 million domestically, and over $542 and $966 million worldwide. Those numbers surely had Disney salivating at the possibility that an adaptation of one of their more recent films from their renaissance could produce—and Beauty and the Beast did just that a year later. The Bill Condon-directed adaptation debuted to an impressive $174.8 million and finished with a whopping $504 million domestically, while crossing the billion-dollar threshold, setting the stage for two of 2019’s biggest hits.
