Black Panther (2018) – $700M

Perhaps no other film this decade best represents the demand for representation than Marvel’s Black Panther. Being the first solo black superhero blockbuster (apologies to the more modest Blade films starring Wesley Snipes), Black Panther was a record-setting film on many levels. With over $202 million in its opening weekend (fourth highest at the time), the film held steady over the course of its run as support for the Ryan Coogler-directed project pushed it to $700 million domestically. Its record run and critical reception also saw it become the first superhero film to garner a Best Picture Oscar nomination.
