Captain Marvel (2019) – $426.8M

Following the success of Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman (which just missed the cut), all eyes were on Marvel with the release of their first solo female-led superhero flick, Captain Marvel. The film continued to carry Wonder Woman’s momentum at the box office as it bested the DC heroine’s opening with $153.4 million, domestic total with $426.8 million, and worldwide take, earning $1.1 billion, all while becoming the 40th movie to cross $1 billion. With more female-led superhero films on the way, including a sequel of its own, it’ll be interesting to see if Captain Marvel will continue to be the standard, or simply be another hurdle for future releases to overcome.
