Cast Away (2000)

This Oscar-nominated film takes the notion of a beach vacation to an extreme, but its sunshine and tranquility entice all the same. As a man is marooned on a desert island following a disastrous plane crash in the ocean, he battles the elements and his declining mental state in order to survive. Tom Hanks plays the determined man whose only companion is a volleyball he names Wilson.

Fun fact: As production on the film halted so Tom could lose weight and grow out his hair, director Robert Zemeckis employed the same crew to shoot What Lies Beneath, which was also released in 2000.
