Ming Na as Fa Mulan – Mulan (1998)

Though Disney thought they were doing the material right with its 2020 live-action remake, hindsight has now shown (at least in the eyes of general audiences) that accurate ethnic casting doesn’t make for a better representative film. In many ways the original film still holds up well and shows a love and attention to Chinese culture that only comes off as surface deep in the remake. Though the voice cast features actors of various Asian ethnicities, Disney did keep the leads voiced by actors of Chinese descent, with Ming-na Wen taking on the titular role. Although she's gone on to have a successful career in her own right, for many she is the iconic voice of Mulan, breathing an air of rebelliousness, courage, determination, vulnerability, honor and strength into her character.
