rob-stewart-directorCanadian filmmaker Rob Stewart accepted the International Eco-Hero award this past weekend, bringing his credentials up to well over 50 awards for his joint efforts on Sharkwater and Revolution. The director developed an aptitude for photography in his youth and switched focus to filmography after noticing a void in public awareness with concern to environmental issues.

Sharkwater, released in 2006, aimed to challenge stereotypes of sharks and highlight their significant contribution to the natural evolution of the seas. The spectacular footage and raw emotion that Rob uses to capture natural shark populations in an effort to protect them gained critical acclaim immediately following the release of the film. Rob began his domination of international film festivals in 2006, where he won Best Film in the Atlantic Film Festival. He has won a variety of awards, ranging from Best Sound Editing to Best Youth Documentary, Best Film, Best HD Feature, and the Genesis Award for Best Documentary in 2008. All in all, Sharkwater went on to win over 30 International awards.

Rob’s passion for advocacy sparked a new film, Revolution. This film picks up where the last left off, raising awareness about our depleting eco-system and the differences we can make before it’s too late. It focuses on the daunting possibility of the extinction of the human race, should we fail to correct the faults in our lifestyles. This documentary took Rob four years on an adventure through 15 different countries to film. His efforts were well received in the form of another onslaught of awards – Best Documentary, Most Popular Environmental Film, Favourite Documentary, the Santa Barbara Social Justice Award and most recently, the International Eco-Hero award. Though the feat is far from over, this film has already won over 20 awards.

His work has gained steady momentum over the years, impacting both adults and students. Rob praises the efforts of the youth, empowering them with their movements and encouraging them to take a stand for the land that they will soon inherit. Rob has also used his films to motivate and inspire in the classroom, providing teachers with resources and activities to supplement learning. ~Nadira Chand
