Ryan Reynolds to star as the Flash?

By Alexandra Heilbron on August 22, 2007 | 90 Comments

Ryan ReynoldsRyan Reynolds (Van Wilder) told MTV that he’s in talks to star in a film adaptation of the comic superhero the Flash. Though the film was in planning for two years, production is finally moving ahead, according to the actor, who said: “No, the Flash (movie) isn’t dead at all. I don’t really know how much I’m allowed to talk about that stuff. But it’s no secret that they have a JLA (Justice League of America) script and it’s a project that’s in development. I’d love to do it, it’s just making it feasible. It’s a lot of money and it’s a very difficult character to represent. You can’t just have (the Flash) be a blur running by. These days people need to see more than that.”

“Its a lot of money and its a very difficult character to represent.”

    This is sooo true…

  3. Norbit • August 22, 2007 @ 12:23 PM

Sam Jones will ALWAYS be Flash.

  4. Anonymous • August 22, 2007 @ 12:40 PM

he was made for the role, i think it is a great fit

  5. quinn • August 24, 2007 @ 12:05 AM

Sam Jones was Flash Gordon, not the Flash.

  6. Jessica • August 24, 2007 @ 12:06 AM

This would be the biggest and best comic-book movie EVER if they get Zac Efron for The Flash.

  7. Perfection in a Pink Bikini • August 24, 2007 @ 2:13 AM

Zac’s the HOTTEST actor in Hollywood and he’s perfect for this!

  8. Anonymous • August 24, 2007 @ 2:39 AM

I’d rather see Burt Reynolds than some hack from Van Wilder…

  9. COVER GIRL • August 24, 2007 @ 2:42 AM

Zac kicking butt in tight red spandex would be a dream come true!!! He’s sooo sexy!

  10. AR • August 24, 2007 @ 6:31 AM

Ryan Reynold is too much of a dip to play the flash. It needs to be someone with a really good body. James Franco comes to mind for some reason……maybe it’s the green goblin suit.

  11. Onyx • August 24, 2007 @ 6:32 AM

I think they should stick with John Wesley Shipp from the Flash TV series. He did a good job and is familiar with the character.

  12. AR • August 24, 2007 @ 6:32 AM

John Wesley Shipp is too old…..I agree he was good in the series but isn’t he in his 50’s now?

  13. Marc N • August 24, 2007 @ 7:27 AM

YEAHHHHHHHH !!!!! Ryan Reynolds is the perfect actor for Flash….. last time i watch flash on tv only one season , sadly so glad to see Flash back to action, hopefully to have sequels movies but who knows ?????? hope that good movie not cheesy movie keep running ….. Flash

After seeing Zac Efron in “Hairspray” and the “High School Musical” movies, I can totally see him as The Flash. Frankly, no one else is even close.

  15. The Golden Martian • August 24, 2007 @ 7:46 AM

    Jim Carrey would be good.

  16. Ginger Grant • August 24, 2007 @ 7:51 AM

Zac is hot right now, but if he’s unavailable Will Smith could do it.

  17. Slippery Pete • August 24, 2007 @ 7:56 AM

Bloom’s a good choice; Reynolds looks too much like Dan Ackroyd to make a convincing superhero.

  18. Anonymous • August 24, 2007 @ 7:57 AM

    Definitely Zac Efron.

  19. Harold Potter • August 24, 2007 @ 8:14 AM

    Efron.

  20. Anonymous • August 24, 2007 @ 8:18 AM

Zac Efron is my favourite actor; I never miss an episode of SCRUBS.

  21. amac • August 24, 2007 @ 8:19 AM

I think he would be perfect, the Flash has a great sense of humor as does Reynolds. Someone mentioned the flash will need a really good body, obviously they didn’t see Reynold in Blade, he was ripped and a great character. He would make a great Flash.

  22. Anonymous • August 24, 2007 @ 8:24 AM

Hopefully Sam Jones will play an important role in the movie.

  23. Honest Phil • August 24, 2007 @ 8:27 AM

I like the idea of Jim Carrey for the part.

  24. Anonymous • August 24, 2007 @ 8:52 AM

I think I like Jim Carrey as the part JIM CARREY RULES

  25. Todd Hagar • August 24, 2007 @ 9:15 AM

Ryan Reynolds as the Flash? What’s the problem? A gig is a gig. The most important thing to consider is “show me the money”. Flash the cash. This guy has a face that sells tickets ands a personality that keeps you laughing. What more can you ask for but the best for this Canadian kid to succeed.

  26. Jenny • August 24, 2007 @ 9:38 AM

Ryan Reynold is ideal to play the role, he’s funny, likable and is very well built for the role. Zac Efron is a punk surfer boy, he’s more suited to play Robin more than anyhting else.

Like Amac said, check out Reynold in Blade trinity, or Smoking Aces; he’s in excellent shape.

The flash can’t be some muscle bound freak, after all all he does is run around all day.

Orlando Bloom looks like a little girl, he shoudl play supergirl!

  27. John • August 24, 2007 @ 9:39 AM

Ryan’s a smart ass- in the comic’s the Flash is the same way. He’s also full of himself right now, and the Flash has a big ego so this role is made for him. This isn’t going to be a musical so I don’t see the point in casting someone else. Of course if DC could stand one of their core characters singing and dancing…………

  28. Anonymous • August 24, 2007 @ 11:20 AM

I’d love to see Zac as Flash Gordon but not if it means he’ll be leaving Scrubs. I don’t think Ryan Reynolds can act and would much rather see Jim Carrey in the part anyway.

  29. Anony • August 24, 2007 @ 11:22 AM

The gu from SCRUBS is Zac Branf, not Zac Efron. Silly ppl.

  30. Ed Davis • August 24, 2007 @ 11:28 AM

Van Wilder is one of the WORST movies EVER, so Reynolds isn’t a serious contender for a demanding role such as this. Gerard Butler is a much better fit.

  31. Percival Spermley • August 24, 2007 @ 11:30 AM

    Harrison Ford.

  32. Mariah • August 24, 2007 @ 11:38 AM

Flash or no Flash, Zac Efron is already my hero.

  33. Anonymous • August 24, 2007 @ 11:46 AM

The original Flash movie is a classic; they should just leave it alone.

  34. Anonymous • August 24, 2007 @ 11:55 AM

Anyone who doubts Ryan’s acting chops should check out his work in “Fracture” opposite Anthony Hopkins; he’s amazing.

  35. Ralyks • August 24, 2007 @ 1:41 PM

Ryan Gosling was opposite Anthony Hopkins in ‘Fracture’… not Ryan Reynolds.

  36. Gewher • August 24, 2007 @ 2:11 PM

Zac Efron??!!!! Are you guys all on crack?? Have you even watched High School Musical (1 and 2) or even worse, the Derby Stallion???!!!! The only movie I’ve seen him acting remotely well is Hairspray, and Elijah Kelley completely stole the show in the sexiness factor.

  37. Blur • August 24, 2007 @ 3:19 PM

Flash Gordon is not the same character as the Flash. Duh! lol Go to http://www.dccomics.com and get an education. Second of all, it’s “Wally” West, not Wolly. Who in the hell is named “Wolly”? Stupid people who can’t spell.

  38. Anonymous • August 24, 2007 @ 3:52 PM

Zac was incredible in HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL; he’ll be great as Flash.

  39. Curly • August 24, 2007 @ 3:54 PM

    “Fracture” wasn’t that good.

  40. Curly • August 24, 2007 @ 3:55 PM

    It’s overrated, no question.

  41. Norbit • August 24, 2007 @ 4:48 PM

Ryan’s performance in FRACTURE was one of the year’s best.

  42. Alvin • August 24, 2007 @ 6:29 PM

um… we’re talkin about Wally West, so what does zac efron have to do with this…? wally west is like around 26 and older. But… this zac efron can play the young Wally West as kid flash. OR he can play Bart Allen, who is also Kid Flash who becomes The Flash later on, but i doubt that theres gonna be a Bart Allen. BUT back to the main subject, i think ryan reynolds could possibly play wally west cause wally west was always the wacky guy. i could see reynolds play as the flash ( wally west)

  43. Samantha • August 25, 2007 @ 12:43 AM

OK First Ryan Reynolds was not in Fracture honey that was Ryan Gosling (great movie by the way) But I think that Ryan would be awesome. Reynolds that is NOT Gosling! I mean does anyone remember his body in the Blade Flick OMG move over Brad Pitt there’s a new man in town and it’s a Canadian…LOVE IT! As for this Zac kid well to tell you the truth. I’m not that much into him at all. I mean he was great as the Stereotypical “Straight” male dancer who wins the girl in movie but come on, Can you imagine him as a super hero? LET alone THE FLASH! NO WAY…. Although I’m sure High School Musical three will be great it’s NO action flick!

  44. Anonymous • August 25, 2007 @ 1:57 AM

Ryan Gosling would be a great Flash but I’ll admit Van Wilder sucked.

  45. Drew Careymore • August 25, 2007 @ 2:08 AM

    1 Zac Efron
    2 Ben Affleck
    3 Sidney Crosby

  46. Idaho Iggy • August 25, 2007 @ 2:14 AM

Dustin Hoffman should play The Flash.

  47. Evelyn • August 25, 2007 @ 3:28 AM

    Ben Affleck

  48. F. Kruenk, A Cobbler • August 25, 2007 @ 8:19 AM

Reynolds was effectively creepy in Murder By Numbers with Sandra Bullock, but in my opinion lacks the profile and charisma to carry an epic comic-book movie. Efron would be my pick; he’s affable, good-looking, and proved himself to be a fine actor in Garden State.

  49. Carter • August 25, 2007 @ 8:32 AM

They should get Moira Kelly to play Dale Arden.

  50. Bill • August 25, 2007 @ 9:13 AM

Scarlett Johansson would make a fine Col. Deering. Can’t wait to see this movie!!!

  51. Anonymous • August 25, 2007 @ 9:16 AM

    I say Ryan Gosling.

  52. Anonymous • August 25, 2007 @ 9:21 AM

Of course it MUST be Zac Efron — he’s the perfect male!!!!

  53. Beyonce-in-Training • August 25, 2007 @ 9:22 AM

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  54. echo • August 25, 2007 @ 9:35 AM

That was Zac Braf in Garden State not Zac Efron. As for Reyenolds I think he would be perfect. And I think he has a bit more notoriety as a movie star and more charisma than a certin someone who just recently played Superman. You know that soap opera actor Brandon Routh. And again this is about the Flash, The Fastest Man Alive the DC comic book character not Flash Gordon.

  55. Alvin • August 25, 2007 @ 1:24 PM

I dont think i want Ben Affleck as Flash, i mean
after Dare Devil… i dont think i ever wanna see him as a superhero ever again

  56. Veronica Millar • August 25, 2007 @ 1:26 PM

Ryan Reynilds Is Perfect for Flash!!
He has the looks and sense of humor to be The Flash!!!!!! I think Zac is too young to play Flash. Maybe Kid Flash. But not the Flash!!

  57. Anonymous • August 25, 2007 @ 1:52 PM

Affleck made a great Superman so why not??

  58. Joe • August 25, 2007 @ 6:44 PM

Will Twiki be in the new film?

  59. Anonymous • August 25, 2007 @ 6:47 PM

Reynolds can’t act. Even if they lighten his hair, he’ll NEVER replace Sam Jones.

  60. Anonymous • August 25, 2007 @ 6:53 PM

Anyone who doubts Reynolds’ acting chops hasn’t seen Murder By Numbers.

  61. Ben When • August 25, 2007 @ 6:55 PM

I second Moira Kelly for Dale Arden!

  62. Anonymous • August 25, 2007 @ 6:55 PM

    Efron.

  63. Sparky • August 25, 2007 @ 8:20 PM

Ryan would be the right choice for the role of Flash. Efron would be the right choice if you wanted Flash to be GAY! We don’t want that so lets stop thinking of him getting the role, cause the last thing we need is the Flash singing and dancing when he meets up with the bad guys. That would be funny for about 10 seconds and then it would just be, well Gay! Go Ryan Reynolds!!

  64. Cate • August 25, 2007 @ 9:22 PM

C’mon people. Keep your actors straight. Gosling played in Murder by Numbers.
If the producers want to create a good movie, they’ll avoid reinventing the mousetrap. Don’t go with the “next best thing” or replicate.
And for age, Reynolds is actually too old for the character, but look at Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan in all those Tom Clancy flicks. . .

  65. LMD777 • August 25, 2007 @ 10:12 PM

I personally think that Ryan REynolds can pull it off! He will have to work for it but he has proven his talent lately. I wish you the best Ryan and make it work!!

  66. Anonymous • August 26, 2007 @ 1:30 AM

Justin Timberlake gets my vote for Flash, and Katie Holmes would be my pick for Dale.

  67. Sal • August 26, 2007 @ 2:30 AM

Yes, I think he would be great as the Flash that’s a movie we would want to see.

  68. Anonymous • August 26, 2007 @ 3:14 AM

There’s only one man with the looks and intensity to pull off The Flash, and that man is Taylor Hicks.

  69. Gurn Blanston • August 26, 2007 @ 3:26 AM

I don’t understand the people saying RR is a poor choice to pull this off. He would bring a strong screen presence and he’s popular with young people. Unlike other names being bandied about (Taylor Hicks?!?!) he’s worked with A-list directors and has even played heroes onscreen before (FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS). As far as I’m concerned, it’s Ryan all the way!

  70. Anonymous • August 26, 2007 @ 3:28 AM

I love the High School Musical trilogy so I’m rooting for Zac Efron.

  71. Anonymous • August 26, 2007 @ 3:40 AM

Ryan strikes me as a good fit so long as it doesn’t interfere with his American Idol committments.

  72. Kara • August 26, 2007 @ 6:55 AM

    I enjoyed “Garden State” immensely.

  73. Coop • August 26, 2007 @ 6:58 AM

Reynolds could very well be the next Christian Bale if his work in Fracture is anything to go by. I’m looking forward to this movie now.

  74. A Keebler Elf • August 26, 2007 @ 7:01 AM

I’m always happy to see Zac Efron’s latest project, plus I think “Fracture” is terribly overrated…

  75. Anonymous • August 26, 2007 @ 7:11 AM

I’ve heard the producers want Brad Garrett to play Ming, but it’s going to be hard to improve on Max Von Sydow.

  76. Mia • August 26, 2007 @ 11:25 AM

Zac Efron wud be great in that part

  77. Anon. • August 26, 2007 @ 12:49 PM

    1. The Flash is NOT Flash Gordon

    2. Zac Braff is the actor from Garden State and Scrubs; Zac Efron is the young kid from High School Musical and Hairspray. Neither would make a good Flash.

    3. While both Ryan Gosling and Ryan Reynolds are Canadians and I enjoy their work, Ryan Gosling was in Fracture and Murder by Numbers; Ryan Reynolds can be seen in Smokin’ Aces, Blade: Trinity and Van Wilder. He also used to be engaged to Alanis Morrisette.

Being a comic fan, Ryan Reynolds has the right personality and presence to play the Flash. He is sarcastic, hilarious and has the right build to be a man who has an incredible metabolism and gets a lot of cardiovascular excerise.

The Flash is basically Van Wilder with superpowers and unless they decide to find an unknown, out of working actors today, Ryan Reynolds is the first name to come to mind.

  78. Anonymous • August 26, 2007 @ 7:20 PM

Next to no one on this board seems to know who Reynolds is, so that’s an immediate strike against him. Signing Efron would guarantee an enormous turnout for the movie, and he’s young enough to make a trilogy, a la Spider-Man. Efron it is.

  79. does it matter? • August 26, 2007 @ 8:27 PM

Zac Efron is waaay too young to play the role. The Flash isn’t a kid! We don’t need another comic book hero ruined, by casting some pretty face to “act” the role. Look at some bad casting for heroes: Jessica Alba as Sue Storm in Fantastic Four and Ben Affleck as Daredevil. Pretty faces, yes, good actors: NO! Tobey Maguire and Christian Bale have set pretty high standards for good acting in “comic book” movies.
I think Ryan Reynolds could pull off the Flash, but only if they write a really good script.

  80. Anonymous • August 27, 2007 @ 6:08 AM

    What about Paul Hogan?

  81. London Dairy Air • August 27, 2007 @ 6:13 AM

“Look at some bad casting for heroes: Jessica Alba as Sue Storm in Fantastic Four and Ben Affleck as Daredevil. Pretty faces, yes, good actors: NO!”

And you think “Mr. Van Wilder” would be an improvement in the thespian sweepstakes?!?! The man’s a clod!!!

  82. Public Official • August 27, 2007 @ 6:16 AM

Efron for Flash and Travolta as Ming.

  83. Anonymous • August 27, 2007 @ 7:05 AM

This movie would be a disaster with Reynolds in the lead; they might just as well cast Stifler…

  84. Pencil Neck • August 27, 2007 @ 7:06 AM

I like the idea of Travolta as Ming.

  85. Anonymous • August 27, 2007 @ 4:04 PM

  86. Josée • August 27, 2007 @ 7:16 PM

  87. Josée • August 27, 2007 @ 7:18 PM

and lets not forget a very good actor…I just love him…I’d go see anything he does because I know it will be good.

  88. LAWRENCE WELSH • August 28, 2007 @ 8:09 AM

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE MOVIE I REMEBER THE JUSTICE LEAUGE FROM CARTOONS I DONT CARE WHO PLAYS THE FLASH AS LONG AS IT IS A GOOD MOVE AND HAS AN AWSOME STORE LINE

  89. Anonymous • September 27, 2007 @ 10:46 PM

Does any one know what they are talking about, mixing up flash gordan and the flash. The only thing they really have in common is the name. zac efron is 19 and looks young, the flash isn’t that young. Ryan Reynolds is not a bad choice.
