51ipkA2dJlL._SS500_Fans of “Where the Wild Things Are” can now dive deeper into the monstrous fantasy world.

Critically acclaimed writer Dave Eggers, author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, and What Is The What is set to release his latest novel The Wild Things, adapted from Maurice Sendak’s children’s classic Where the Wild Things Are. Eggers took on the task of turning a 48-page children’s picture book, into a 281-page rendition of the classic tale that takes readers deeper into the imaginary world filled with monsters, mischief and mayhem.

The novel, which is also based on the movie Where the Wild Things Are, was brought to life on the big screen with its worldwide theatrical release in October 2009. The film was written by Spike Jonze and David Eggers.  However, this wasn’t the first time Eggers has co-written a screenplay, he also helped write the screenplay for the film Away We Go starring Jon Krasinki and Maya Rudolph.

Staying true to the original storyline, Eggers begins with young Max feeling unwanted at home by his sister who has outgrown him, his mother who is constantly distracted, and an ever-absent father.

Reaching his limit with his family, Max does what any kid would do―he runs away from home. After finding a sail boat on a nearby dock, Max drifts along the water until his boat anchors on an island that is inhabited by large monstrous creatures that create their own rules to live by, which aren’t many. The mysterious creatures of the island scream and squash whatever is in their way. Overwhelmed with a sense of belonging Max appoints himself as their new ruler and begins an adventurous tale of what it means to unleash your wild side.

Eggers dives into Max’s mind and unveils what it’s like to be a kid filled with frustration, and feelings of rejection in a chaotic environment. Eggers also captures the innocence of a child’s imagination that makes any adult yearn to return to the days when they too sailed away to a place they could call their own.

The novel is set for release on March 13, 2010 (Vintage Canada – a division of Random House Canada).
