You know him as the wacky Emmett Brown in Back to the Future. You also know him from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and TV's Taxi. Christopher Lloyd often plays the quirky, crazy and off-beat characters in films. Yet in real life, he is a shy, retiring individual who makes it a policy never to give interviews.
Born in Stamford, Connecticut, Lloyd began acting in summer stock when he was only 16. Later, he studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York and appeared in numerous Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, including A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Harlot and the Hunted, The Seagull, Macbeth, In the Boom Boom Room, Cracks, As They Put Handcuffs on the Flowers and King Lear, to name a few.
His first film appearance was in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, a film that won the Oscar for Best Film in 1975. Next, he made a guest appearance on Taxi and became one of the regular crew, along with his pal, Danny De Vito.
With his nutty persona now a trademark, Lloyd went on to play memorable characters such as "Reverend Jim Ignatowski", "Doc Brown", "Fester Addams" and "Colonel Kruge." He has even starred in a computer game called "Toonstruck." He went on to appear in several films including Jack and the Beanstalk (2010), The Chateau Meroux (2010), Piranha 3D (2010) and its sequel Piranha 3DD (2012).
Some of his recent projects include the comedy A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014) with Seth MacFarlane and Charlize Theron, the crime thriller Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014) with Bruce Willis and Jessica Alba, the comedy Going in Style (2017) with Morgan Freeman and the road trip flick Boundaries (2018), with Vera Farmiga and Christopher Plummer. Most recently, however, Lloyd starred in the thriller Nobody(2021) opposite Bob Odenkirk and in the lighthearted comedy Senior Moment(2021).
Lloyd has won three Emmy Awards for his television work (one for his guest-starring role in an episode of the Canadian series Road to Avonlea) as well as numerous awards for his theatrical roles. He is a delight for audiences and critics alike who love to be transported to the wild side by this gentle, rubber-faced maniac.
