Born in New York as Richard Donald Schwartzberger, Donner began his directing career in live television, first with theatrical adaptations and then with numerous successful series, including The Twilight Zone, The Fugitive, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., The Wild, Wild West, The F.B.I. and Cannon. His credits also include pilots for Wanted: Dead or Alive, Kojack and Bronk.

On the silver screen, Donner's credits include The Omen, Superman, Inside Movies, The Toy, Ladyhawke and The Goonies, which he also produced with Steven Spielberg. Donner is the executive producer of HBO's Tales From the Crypt and had the same responsibility for the three Free Willy movies.

In 2000, he received a Hollywood Discovery Award for Outstanding Achievement in Directing, followed by a Joseph L. Mankiewicz Excellence in Filmmaking Award in 2002 from the Director's View Film Festival.

Donner has been married to producer Lauren Shuler Donner since 1985.
