Stephen Sommers biography
The Mummy Returns Director
Date of Birth: March 20, 1962
Born and raised in St. Cloud, Minnesota, Sommers attended St. John's University in his home state before going to Spain to study at the University of Seville. After his schooling he spent the next four years performing in theater and managing rock bands throughout Europe.
Upon returning to the States, he moved to L.A. where he worked as both a waiter and house
painter while attending USC School of Cinema and Television. During his three years of
study, he directed the short film, Perfect Alibi. This film garnered him several student
honors including The Focus and the Student Academy Awards.
After graduating with an M.A. degree, he wrote and directed his first feature Catch Me
If You Can (1989). Spending some time as a staff writer for Hollywood Pictures, he
returned to writing and directing his own work in 1995 with the film The Adventures of
Huck Finn. With the success of Huck, he went on to write and direct more projects like
The Jungle Book , the blockbuster The Mummy and its sequel, The Mummy
Returns. Sommers has also done some work for television such as writing and executive
producing Oliver Twist for director Tony Bill.
Sommers lives in Santa Barbara, California with his wife Jana and two daughters.
