Hailing from England, Tom Hardy began his screen career when he was plucked straight from London's Drama Centre for a role in HBO's award-winning World War II miniseries Band of Brothers, executive produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. He went on to appear in the features Black Hawk Down (2001), directed by Ridley Scott; Star Trek: Nemesis (2002), in which he played the lead villain; The Reckoning (2003) with Willem Dafoe and Paul Bettany; and Dot the I (2003), from first-time writer/director Matthew Parkhill.

In 2009, Tom won a British Independent Film Award for Best Actor for his work in the title role of the 2008 thriller Bronson. Other film credits include the crime thriller Layer Cake (2004) with Daniel Craig, Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette (2006), Guy Ritchie's action comedy RocknRolla (2008) alongside Gerard Butler and Tom Wilkinson, and Inception (2010) with Leonardo DiCaprio.

On television, Tom earned a BAFTA TV nomination for Best Actor for his performance in the HBO movie Stuart: A Life Backwards. He also portrayed Heathcliff in the 2009 ITV production of Wuthering Heights. His small screen credits include the telefilms Oliver Twist, A for Andromeda, Sweeney Todd, Gideon's Daughter, and Colditz, as well as the BBC miniseries The Virgin Queen, in which he starred as Queen Elizabeth's lover, Robert Dudley.

Tom has starred in numerous plays in London's West End, including Blood and In Arabia We'd All Be Kings, winning the Outstanding Newcomer Award at the 2003 Evening Standard Theatre Awards for his work in both productions. For the latter play, he was also nominated for a 2004 Olivier Award. In 2005, Hardy starred in the London premiere of Brett C. Leonard's Roger and Vanessa, under the direction of Robert Delamere. He and Delamere also run a theater workshop/gym called Shotgun at London's Theatre 503.

He continued to star alongside leading A-listers such as Colin Firth and Gary Oldman in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), Nick Nolte in Warrior (2011) and Reese Witherspoon in This Means War (2012). Following these releases, he then teamed up with his Inception director, Christopher Nolan, to play the role of a lifetime—iconic comic book villain, Bane, in Nolan's final Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises (2012). He changed up his look to play the lead in the Western film Lawless (2012) and then starred in the action thriller Mad Max: Fury Road (2015).

Most recently, Tom returned to theaters in the superhero film Venom(2018) in the role of investigative reporter Eddie Brock who becomes host an the alien symbiote that gives him the alter-ego of Venom. He will also play Al Capone in the upcoming ganster film Fonzo (2019) and reprise his character Mad Max in the sequel, Mad Max: The Wasteland.

For his work as John Fitzgerald in The Revenant (2016), he earned his first Academy Award nomination, in the Supporting Actor category. Since then, he's appeared in the war drama Dunkirk (2017), directed by Kenneth Branagh.

Tom married his first wife, Sarah Ward, in 1999. They have one child together. The pair divorced in 2004 and he later married his Wurthering Heights co-star Charlotte Riley in 2010. Together they have one child.
