Pharrell has been making headlines for lots of reasons lately: his Academy Award-nominated hit song “Happy,” his bold red carpet fashion choices and most importantly, his hat. The Vivienne Westwood creation, which Pharrell first sported at this year’s Grammy Awards, created a lot of buzz on social media for its funny appearance and striking resemblance to the hat in Arby’s fast-food chain logo. The ranger-style fedora, which attracted instant popularity and even got its own Twitter account, was put up for auction on eBay two weeks ago. The 40-year-old hitmaker promised a letter of authenticity to the highest bidder, as well as a guarantee that all proceeds would go to his charity, From One Hand To Another.
As for the buyer, it was none other than Arby’s, whose logo is a red ranger-style hat that could pass as Pharrell’s hat’s twin. The fast-food chain shelled out $44,100 for the iconic hat and tweeted at Pharrell: “You’re welcome. We’re HAPPY to support a great cause & get our hat back. Good luck at the #Oscars tonight!” The Arby’s tweet was a response to Pharrell’s public thank you after the auction closed on Sunday: “Thank you to whoever bought my Grammy hat on @eBay for $44,100. Your donation benefits From One Hand to Another.” ~Yara Matar
