Injured Transformers extra reaches settlement

After almost two years, a settlement has been reached in the lawsuit between a Transformers extra and the movie studio behind it. Gabriela Cedillo was awarded $18.5 million from Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Studios after being seriously injured while working as an extra on the movie Transformers: Dark of the Moon in 2010. Cedillo, a 26-year old college student, was being paid minimum wage to drive her car on the opposite lane of an Indiana street while stunt cars, hooked onto a cable, were sent flying into the air by explosives. However, while executing the stunt a cable snapped and smashed through Cedillo’s car hood and windshield. Not only had the stunt failed the day before but the studio didn’t have permits for the explosives used in the scene.

The Chicago woman had to have a portion of her skull removed and suffers from memory problems, seizures, is blind in one eye and is partially paralyzed, requiring 24-hour care from her family. After the incident, the studio led her family to believe they would cover her medical costs only to later renege and force her onto a public aid. “While they make their billions of dollars in gross revenue from the movie, taxpayers are paying medical bills for her,” said her attorney, Todd Smith to the Los Angeles Times. ~Kyle Sharp
