Ted now on Blu-ray/DVD

In the feature film Ted, a little boy named John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) makes a Christmas wish – that Ted, his teddy bear, would come to life. His wish comes true and although Ted is an instant celebrity who makes the round of TV talk shows, he and John have a normal childhood growing up in Boston. As an adult, John continues to have Ted by his side, even when he and his longtime girlfriend Lori (Mila Kunis) live together. However, even though Ted is as cute as ever, he’s changed. His constant use of foul language, drugs and booze offend Lori. When she comes home to find him with four prostitutes and something nasty on the floor, she decides it’s time for Ted to move out, find a job and an apartment of his own.

Seth MacFarlane, who directed and co-wrote the story, also provides the voice of Ted. He’s best known for creating, writing and directing the politically incorrect TV show Family Guy. I found the movie laugh-out-loud funny, despite some over-the-top offensive scenes. The story is never boring – you’ll want to know what happens to this little bear with the heavy Boston accent. He may have a foul mouth, but he’s a lovable bear with a heart of gold. Wahlberg does a great job playing an unambitious but sweet guy who loves his bear and his girl.

The story has a lot of twists, turns and cameos, including an appearance by Flash Gordon star Sam J. Jones as John’s childhood hero and an uncredited appearance by Ryan Reynolds as the gay boyfriend of John’s co-worker.

Special features on the DVD include a gag reel, a behind-the-scenes making of Ted featurette and commentary with MacFarlane, Wahlberg and co-writer Alec Sulkin. The Bu-ray comes with deleted scenes, alternate takes, “Teddy Bear Scuffle” and more. ~Alexandra Heilbron

Also releasing December 11, 2012 on Blu-ray and DVD are The Bourne Legacy, Girls: The Complete First Season; Ice Age: Continental Drift; and V/H/S.
