Elton John too old to adopt baby

By Alexandra Heilbron on September 14, 2009 | 22 Comments

Elton John, baby Lev and David FurnishElton John, 62, announced on Saturday that he wanted to adopt Lev, a 14-month-old boy he met while visiting a Ukrainian orphanage as part of his work with the Elton John Aids Foundation, but government minister Yuriy Pavlenko told the Associated Press that the age difference between an adoptive parent and a child must be 45 years or less. “Foreign citizens who are single have no right to adopt children… and the age difference between the adopter and the child cannot be more than 45 years,” Mr Pavlenko said, adding that John’s civil partnership with David Furnish, 46, would not be recognized as a marriage in the Ukraine. “The law is the same for everybody — for a president, for a minister, for Elton John.” Their only hope would be a presidential dispensation, but according to the country’s law, if Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko granted John and Furnish the right to adopt Lev, they would also have to adopt the baby’s brother.

wow. refusing to give the baby to someone that can provide for them for the rest of their life is pretty sickening. i dont care HOW old he is, if he died the baby would still be set for life.

Please come on already… He’s to old for a child what the hell does that have to do with anything, He is a healthy man that can more than enough provide for any child that and a stable home should be the only things at question not the man’s age get real already

  6. Jo-Anne • September 15, 2009 @ 1:03 PM

what if he were a robust 77 year old with a stable home? would you still feel the same way? where do you draw the line…if at all? curious

What does it matter how old he is as long as he is healthy enough to care for the child? I mean I could see if he was sick or couldn’t see or walk or was a fragile man who new he wouldn’t have long to care for the child but no matter how old a person is they can leave their children any day at any time that is the way life works.

I am glad he was not allowed to adopt. Between this man’s age and sexual orientation it just not conductive to a child’s well being. Good call!

  9. tributegirl • September 15, 2009 @ 5:52 PM

All adults have sexual preferences, as long as their preferences do not involve children and the children have nothing at all to do with the adults sexuality, why should it matter?
He could give this child and his brother an excellent life, but instead they will grow up in an orphanage?

The child is HIV positive, supposedly, and his mother hasn’t even put him up for adoption yet.

Even here in Canada, years ago, my aunt wanted to raise her 3 grandsons when my cousin passed but she was in her late 50’s so they wouldn’t let her. Instead, they were adopted by strangers but, at least the 3 of them were kept together. Maybe Elton should try the US..?? Hey, Katherine Jackson is in her 70’s and was given custody of her grandkids. Personally, I think that because this child is sick with HIV, that being adopted by the wealthy Elton John would be a very good thing because he would absolutely have the best of care. I really can’t see anyone else wanting to adopt a child with a deadly disease.

joanne, im just curious how old is celine dions husband? isnt he up there in age? and they are having children? im not being rude, i just forget how old he is?

ernie, most of the gay men and women that you will meet are a LOT more respectful and caring than the rest of the world. you just proved that point by using his sexual preference as an excuse why he cant adopt. perhaps you should never be allowed to adopt or reproduce because youre a man?

tributegirl, great comment i agree completely. and thats what i was thinking (where will they grow up now?)

  12. mandee • September 15, 2009 @ 6:51 PM

nancy, i didnt see your post before i submitted mine. i didnt know there was anything wrong with the child 🙁 thats sad news. and youre right, if he is sick elton would be the best choice because he can afford the best care possible.

  13. Jo-Anne • September 16, 2009 @ 7:51 AM

I’m not sure, mandee, just know he’s quite a bit older than her.

My main point was directed at jennie, “how old is too old” seeing as you feel age should not even be considered in this scenario – however as you can see, no response to that, just more of the same…

  14. jennie_bearz • September 16, 2009 @ 11:42 AM

If your meaning I didn’t leave a response to you Jo-anne wel check again because I did making a short story short I SAID age really does not matter what does matter is if the person is healthy enough to care for the child and weather they can provide a good home for the child and providing has nothing to do with the sexual preferences.

  15. Jo-Anne • September 16, 2009 @ 12:22 PM

    I’ll make my question shorter…

would the 77 year old, (same scenario) be ok with you?

  16. jennie_bearz • September 16, 2009 @ 3:24 PM

Sure why not hell if the person is in good health and has the money to care for the child even when they are gone then why make a little child sufer in the foster care system it just makes no sence to put a child in the system if there is someone there that has the financial means and looks to be in perfect health im sure there is alot of people that would agree with me…

  17. tributegirl • September 16, 2009 @ 8:45 PM

True, jennie, he could just as easily hire a surrogate to bear his child, and he would be allowed to keep that child, so why can’t he take this child out of poverty and give him a home and a family who loves him (I doubt he gets a lot of love in the system!) and can provide for him, even after the parents are unable to take care of him? Besides, younger parents can also get sick and die, I know it’s more likely the older a person is, but it can happen to anyone.

  18. Nancy • September 16, 2009 @ 10:29 PM

Exactly, there is no age limit for you to bear children of your own. It’s all about rights as far as I’m concerned…and I think this CHILD and his brother have the right to a family as long as the family is willing and able. But, it is the law in their country, and it should be respected just as ours should be to outsiders.

  19. tributegirl • September 17, 2009 @ 9:13 AM

True, Nancy, if that country has certain laws, then the laws shouldn’t be broken for Elton or anyone else. But I do think it sucks that this child and his brother are living in an orphanage, living in poverty, when they could have a family and the best of care.

  20. jennie_bearz • September 17, 2009 @ 12:40 PM

It is very true laws shold not be changed for anyone no matter who you are I just wish the laws made a little more sence,I mean it’s the children that are suffering not anyone else.

  21. mandee • September 17, 2009 @ 7:13 PM

joanne, i knew who your comment was directed at 😀 i was just pointing out, to anyone that thinks elton is “too old” to have children, what about celines hubby :S

  22. tributegirl • September 18, 2009 @ 6:06 PM

Agreed again, jennie, the child is the one who suffers in the end, and it would be great if the laws made sense, if they were in the best interests of the child. Unfortunately though, they aren’t.
