Find out what the big secret is at the Oscars!

By Alexandra Heilbron on January 16, 2009 | 35 Comments

Although presenters are usually announced beforehand as an additional enticement to get viewers interested in watching the Academy Awards, this year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is making viewers wait until the night of the ceremony to find out which stars will be present onstage. “There will be fantastic movie stars that appeal to a whole range of movie lovers and fans of our show,” spokesperson Leslie Unger says. “We’re just not going to tell you who they all are.” At least the host, Hugh Jackman, isn’t a secret. The Academy Awards will air live on February 22 beginning at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Well I for one, happen to like surprises!!

  2. Zig Elles • January 16, 2009 @ 1:02 PM

I havn’t missed the Academy Awards since 1959 and will be watching regardless of who’s hosting or presenting. It’s the Super Bowl of the movies. Can’t wait to see them again this year. Zig Elles.ps. I love predicting the winners and enjoy when my picks are the winners.

  3. Jo-Anne. • January 16, 2009 @ 2:18 PM

I agree, Zig. Though I haven’t watched as long as you, I have watched for about 20 years and really enjoy the show. I am curious how Hugh Jackman will host the show, my favourite host was always Billy Crystal.

My family does the Prediction List as well and has a lot of fun with it. My mom won last year, she was amazingly close for all the big winners.

Do you attempt to watch a lot of the nominated movies before the big day? I do. I actually got that one right the previous two years…countdown is on!!! Who will you be wearing, Zig – ha ha…..

  4. quinn • January 16, 2009 @ 5:11 PM

Hey Jo-Anne Billy Crystal has always been my favourite too. I just hope Hugh Jackman can pull it off. Inject something original to something that has gotten stale over the years. Though I mainly watch to see what the ladies are wearing. Sadly the movies take a back seat.

  5. Coop • January 16, 2009 @ 8:29 PM

I agree with all of you despite all the politics involved it really is the “super bowl” for all of us who love film.Haven’t missed one since 1980.

  6. Jo-Anne. • January 17, 2009 @ 12:23 PM

Hey, Coop, Zig.an idea – do you want to do our own predictions here after the nominations are annnounced? Could be fun!

  7. Patricia • January 17, 2009 @ 10:33 PM

I try to watch the nominated films before the Awards as well. I find it helps with predictions. At the moment, I am predicting four obvious Best Picture nominees: Slumdog Millionaire, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk – and the fifth, I’m uncertain. Possibly Revolutionary Road, Doubt, or The Dark Knight. I’d personally go for The Dark Knight.

  8. Coop • January 18, 2009 @ 4:26 AM

Couldn’t agree more on The Dark Night,Patricia and Jo-Anne I’m in.

  9. quinn • January 19, 2009 @ 3:10 AM

Okay lets make this interesting ladies. I think Patricia is right, although the academy never give best picture nominees to action films. So I’m going to go for Revolutionary Road. What do you think for Best actor/actress?

  10. Jo-Anne. • January 19, 2009 @ 10:16 AM

    Okay Quinn,
    let’s make it interesting…

    Best Picture – Slumdog
    Lead Actor – Sean Penn
    Lead Actress – Kate Winslet

I loved the Dark Knight, Patricia, but do not think it will make it in the top 5. I would put in The Reader

  11. tributegirl • January 19, 2009 @ 6:21 PM

    Interesting.

  12. Nancy • January 19, 2009 @ 6:59 PM

    ‘dribble’!!

  13. quinn • January 19, 2009 @ 7:12 PM

Okay I agree with Best Picture Jo-Anne.
    Lead Actor: Mickey Rourke
    Lead Actress: Angelina Jolie
So now we just have to wait and see. Good Luck.

  14. Jo-Anne. • January 19, 2009 @ 7:19 PM

    Hey Quinn!
You know, I think Mickey stands a real good chance, that’s a tough one to choose but I don’t think Jolie will pull through. Time will tell, eh?

Why don’t we wait till the nominations come thru and vote for the top awards again?

  15. quinn • January 19, 2009 @ 11:00 PM

    Sounds good to me.

  16. Nancy • January 20, 2009 @ 9:12 AM

I trust Tribute will have a poll.

  17. tributegirl • January 20, 2009 @ 6:13 PM

They don’t have to now, the expert has spoken!

  18. Vicki • January 22, 2009 @ 11:44 PM

Fun idea, Jo! I like your “Best Pic” and “Actress” choices, and agree that Quinn probably nailed “Actor” with Mickey Rourke. But never mind all that… will Bruce scoop his second “Best Song” Oscar??? I vote YES!

  19. Jo-Anne. • January 23, 2009 @ 4:26 PM

    Vicki!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They shut out The Boss – what were they thinking?
Two nods for Slumdog and none for Bruce?

I’ve had a change of heart for the Best Pic, and Actor (but wouldn’t at all be surprised should Mickey win or Slumdog) – refer to current Oscar storyline and cast your votes.

This is a tough year to choose, don’t think it’s clear cut.

The ONLY clear cut choice would and SHOULD have been Bruce, and I think had he chosen to contribute his immense talent to Slumdog’s soundtrack the outcome would have been different ha ha.

p.s. I never thought of myself as The Expert, but maybe if the Academy was made aware of this new title, I could have been on the Elite Voting Comittee and threw Bruce’s name into the ring! always next year…

  20. Vicki • January 23, 2009 @ 5:24 PM

If you’re a die-hard Bruce fan, Jo, I second your nomination!
Now that I know his song isn’t nominated, I can go back to not really caring who wins any awards. I’ll just enjoy the show for what they’re wearing (or NOT, as I believe you cracked me up with earlier). That is, as long as Joan and Melissa aren’t there to annoy me… hey, didn’t you make me laugh on that subject too?
    You’re very witty:)

  21. Jo-Anne. • January 23, 2009 @ 6:44 PM

    The Biggest Bruce fan ever!
say, just once, wouldn’t you like to see someone answer…

“I’m wearing Giant Tiger Boutique and splurged on 5 in a pack zirconias from Avon”…

and just once, wouldn’t you like to see Joan’s face move when she talked?

  22. Nancy • January 23, 2009 @ 7:05 PM

Well, no surprise here.I think Bruce is long overdue….FOR RETIREMENT!! Never was a fan. Never will be! If it ain’t metal, it’s CRAP!!

  23. Vicki • January 23, 2009 @ 8:42 PM

    Them’s fightin’ words, Nancy…

Just kidding. But seriously, ever seen him live? Three or four concerts of pure, exuberant, exhiliarating joy on earth. He is AMAZING!!!

Been a fan a long, long time and just love him even more today. Guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree:)

  24. Vicki • January 23, 2009 @ 8:44 PM

Sorry, that’s “three or four HOURS (in each concert)”… got so excited just thinking about The Boss that I left out some words!

  25. Nancy • January 23, 2009 @ 9:55 PM

Hahaha! I’m laughing at your excitement. Nope, I’ve never been to any of his concerts..not my type of music and I live in a smaller city so he’s never been here. Nickelback on the other hand, have been here and I love their music (being Canadian helps too…I have a soft spot). I do kind of like one particular song of Springsteen’s though, “Your Hometown”. 😛

  26. Vicki • January 23, 2009 @ 10:35 PM

I like Nickelback too and I think being Canadian does help (I am too). And that Springsteen song is definitely a beautiful choice! Of his later music, I like “The Rising” best and I really like how he sang that particular song at Barack Obama’s inauguration. I don’t get HBO and I would have given ANYTHING to have watched it the whole concert Sunday night!

  27. tributegirl • January 24, 2009 @ 12:44 PM

I like Bruce and Nickeback both, as well as some metal. Actually rap is probably the only genre of music that I don’t enjoy.

Oh, and by the way, since I didn’t put a name to my Expert comment, it is pretty “righteous” to “assume”. At least that’s what I’ve been told previously.

  28. Nancy • January 24, 2009 @ 4:28 PM

Oh come on Tributegirl…you know she “never said that”, “never mentioned your name”, those are “twisted words”…instigator! Laugh out loud (aka LOL).

  29. Nancy • January 24, 2009 @ 4:30 PM

And of course, my previous comment IS sarcastic…for those with no sense of humour!! 😉

  30. tributegirl • January 24, 2009 @ 6:33 PM

Nancy, you are a breath of fresh air!

  31. Jo-Anne. • January 25, 2009 @ 10:05 PM

Vicki, FYI, all four comments above are directed at me. (from people who INSIST they are A) not interested in me and B) don’t stir it up…ceasefire? ha ha)

time to put that idea to rest.

    thanks anyhow for your input.

  32. Nancy • January 26, 2009 @ 1:10 AM

And look at all your comments directed at us…so don’t talk!! I’m not trying to convince your new BFF Vicki of anything. I’m sure she’s smart enough to see the word play that you constantly use with us. You like to throw jabs at the 3 of us, not mentioning our names though…so we have been doing it back! What’s that? You don’t do that? Hmmm…I beg to differ! Sorry to bring your name up mandee but Jo-Anne’s latest “jab” has been towards you. On the ‘John Travolta Blackmailed’ article, mandee commented (Jan. 23 @ 1:30 pm) as to these blackmailers getting a job acting if they aren’t making enough money. Well, of course Jo-Anne had to come on (Jan. 23 @ 1:54 pm) and, not mentioning mandees name, threw a jab at her because mandee has mentioned on here before that she does not get many hours at her current employment. That is why Tributegirl made the comment of “Interesting little jab there Jo” on the Travolta article. So yeah, look who insists SHE never stirs up…!!!

  33. tributegirl • January 26, 2009 @ 7:56 PM

That’s exactly why I said that it was an interesting little jab. And yes, Jo is right about one thing, those 4 comments certainly WERE directed at her, for the reasons Nancy pointed out.
Curious, Jo, why do you seem so concerned about Vicki’s opinion on our comments to you? Almost reminds me of a comment you made to me awhile ago, remember the “pick me, pick me” comment? Pretty sad. Anyway, Vicki actually seems to be getting along very well with all of us, so why drag her into the middle of all this? My opinion is to just leave her be, let her get along with all of us, if at some point she WANTS to join in the fight and take a side, fine, but how about we leave that up to her, huh?

  34. Jo-Anne • January 26, 2009 @ 8:35 PM

    that works for me…

  35. tributegirl • January 27, 2009 @ 5:09 PM

    Great.
