Guillermo del Toro talks about The Hobbit

Guillermo Del ToroOscar-nominated film director Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labrynth, Hellboy) is in New Zealand to make two movies based on The Hobbit. Del Toro also reveals that the landscape will be slightly different and that they plan to shoot for approximately 370 days.

If you’re not up to speed, The Hobbit is the prequel to the Lord of the Rings saga and follows Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit who journeys to the Lonely Mountain accompanied by a group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon Smaug.

The movie, which starts production in March 2010, is set to be a $300 million epic adventure starring Hugo Weaving, who’ll reprise his Lord of the Rings role of Elrond, Andy Serkis (Gollum) and Ian McKellen (Gandalf), who will also reappear in the two highly anticipated films, scheduled for a 2011 and 2012 release. And, although actor James McAvoy (Atonement, Last King of Scotland) is rumored to play Bilbo Baggins, the title role has not yet been confirmed.

Hear about del Toro’s plans for the movies, his thoughts on filming in New Zealand, his life-long obsession with monsters and his new book The Strain.

Yes! Finally in the works. Great director in replacing Peter Jackson.

James McAvoy would make a terrific Bilbo, and del Toro is the best choice if Jackson isn’t available. And Elrond, Gandalf and Gollum have the same great actors playing them…this is the movie I MOST look forward to next year!!!

I can wait, even though peter jackson is not directing it, he is helping to right the script, and has some say. So even though he is not directing he is vary much involved.

    I love the fact that it’s a two-parter. Epic.

James McAvoy would make a great Bilbo! It’s about time they finally tackled “The Hobbit”. Lets hope they do it right.

Jacksons Lord of the Rings was above average and close enough in most areas to satisfy a die-hard fan such as myself, but I loved the Hobbit even more.

Lets hope they take loving care as Tolkien did when he wrote it for his Children in 1937.
