On Christmas day they took their afternoon nap and we kids had to wait till the little bell in the living room rang, so we can go in and start unwrapping. Growing up we would all sit on the stairs and wait for my parents to be ready so we could go downstairs and see what Santa had brought us. My father would make us wait as long as possible by going to the washroom, brushing his teeth, getting dressed and if we tried to hurry him up he would shave.lol. Once he was ready we had to move and let them down first, and boy were they slow. Once down it was Christmas Day. Now when we are all gathered for the holiday we still wait for my dad to take his seat. He knows how to keep us waiting even after all these years. Buy it wouldn’t be Christmas without waiting for him to hand out the gifts. Unfortunately this might be our last year with him in our lives as he is very sick. But someone will take over and do the handing out the gifts in years to come.

My favourite tradition is gathering with family on Christmas Eve and watching Christmas movies while sipping on Peppermint Hot Cocoa and munching on Homemade Christmas sweet treats. We also look forward to opening a gift from Santa on Christmas Eve (new pyjamas and Christmas socks) and seeing what Santa left in our Christmas Stockings is fun for the whole family. My husband died 37 years my children were young, I started to but them a Christmas ornament with there name and the year on it from their dad. Now that I have grandchildren they also get a ornament from grandpa. I call the tree the memory tree because that is all we put on it, sorry to ramble, it is priceless.

Christmas Eve is my favourite night of the year! By mid-afternoon, our home is filled with our family and friends. We have a fondue, homemade meatballs, tasty snacks and delicious desserts. We have a Yankee gift swap which is tons of fun! We play games such as charades and Pictionary which provides all the way to your toes laughs! All of us love spending this special night together.

We have in my family what we call “The Table”.Which was started by my Dad who grew up oldest of 10 kids.So they didn’t have much.My Dad’s philosophy was whatever candy,chocolate,treat,chips,cheezies ect…we could fit on the table the better.He believed all kids should be allowed to indulge and sometimes over indulge at Christmas time.So Christmas eve is when we set up “The Table” for all to eat until their hearts content… 🙂 🙂

We always do the classic opening up presents on Christmas morning with the family then enjoying a feast of Turkey and fixings. Our tradition is for our loved ones that have passed which would be my mother and grandmother. We would fix them a plate, say a prayer and put it in the fire pit outside our house up north out near the forest. This is so they can enjoy it in spirit wether it be the animals that come and eat it or when it burns in the special fire. My mom use to take me when we would make a plate for my grandmother and now I get to pass down this tradition and teaching to my daughter, for her grandmother. My favourite Christmas tradition in my family is something very simple. On Christmas Eve my Mom and I would sit with a glass of Bailey’s, and while watching a Christmas movie, we would chat and grate bread for the next day’s stuffing. No fireworks … no drumrolls … just beautiful moments with a beautiful person.

She would tell us stories of “snow faeries” pointing to the sparkles in the snow under the street lamps. We believed and tried to catch them but they vanished when we got close. Magical. I continue that tradition with my own kids.

A mug of hot apple cider after Santa’s been through, carols softly humming in the background, and the presents all arranged just so. I use these moments to reflect on all that brings joy to those I love. It is my favourite few minutes in the WHOLE year. And, likewise, my favourite tradition.
