Matthew McConaughey hits the motherload with Gold: Blu-ray review

Gold is now available on Blu-ray

In Gold, based on true events, Kenny Wells (Matthew McConaughey) ventures into the jungles of Indonesia to strike it rich in the hopes of respecting his father’s memory and bringing their struggling mining business, Washoe Mining, back to its former glory.

Dreaming of gold, Kenny teams up with geologist Michael Acosta (Édgar Ramirez) to begin drilling in the uncharted jungles of Indonesia. After weeks of drilling with no success and on his last dollar, Kenny learns they’ve finally struck it big and are sitting on a gold mine.

The two become the talk of the mining world and Wall Street as everyone wants in on the fortune they’ve found. But as time goes on, Kenny learns that even fame and fortune come at a price. Whether it be his relationship with long-time love Kay (Bryce Dallas Howard) or his reputation, Kenny must figure out how far he is willing to go to keep his dream going.

Overall, this was a highly entertaining film. All the actors involved give great performances, but Matthew McConaughey and Édgar Ramirez steal the show completely. Not because they are the main characters, but because they are just so fun to watch, especially together. The camaraderie the two share is entirely believable. McConaughey as Kenny Wells is especially electric, though. He conveyed all emotion, whether it be desperation, anger or excitement with a sense of quick-witted humor and confidence.

The story itself is also a great one. The film is based on similar events that occurred in the ’90s with Calgary-based mining company Bre-X, owned by David Walsh (in this case, the real Kenny Wells). If you’re unfamiliar with the events that inspired the film, then you’re in for an even bigger treat as an unsuspected twist offers an entertaining surprise. Best to watch the film first and then research the true story after.

Deleted Sequence features a deleted scene between Kenny and his long-time girlfriend, Kay.
