‘Webster’ dad Alex Karras dead at 77

Former NFL player/actor Alex Karras, who was known for playing the father figure in the 1980’s sitcom Webster, died in his home this morning at the age of 77 after losing his battle against kidney failure. He was surrounded by his family when he passed. Earlier this year, Karras — who had been diagnosed with dementia a few years ago — was one of the leading forces in a lawsuit filed against the NFL over head injuries and the subsequent results that players suffer later in their lives. After retiring from the game in 1971, Karras began making the transition to acting. Before landing the recurring role on Webster, he played Mongo alongside Mel Brooks in the 1974 Oscar-nominated comedy western Blazing Saddles. Karras is survived by his wife, actress Susan Clark (pictured at left — she played his on-screen wife in Webster), and his three children.
