Jennifer Lawrence calls acting stupid

Oscar-nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence, 22, describes herself as “vastly uneducated” during an interview with Vanity Fair in their February 2013 issue. She told them: “Not to sound rude, but [acting] is stupid. Everybody’s like, ‘How can you remain with a level head?’ And I’m like, ‘Why would I ever get cocky? I’m not saving anybody’s life. There are doctors who save lives and firemen who run into burning buildings. I’m making movies. It’s stupid.’” However, she understands what it’s like to be starstruck, describing a hilarious encounter with Meryl Streep: “Once I’m obsessed with somebody, I’m terrified of them instantly. I’m not scared of them—I’m scared of me and how I will react. Like, for instance, one time someone was introducing me to Bill Maher, and I saw Meryl Streep walk into the room, and I literally put my hand right in Bill Maher’s face and said, ‘Not now, Bill,’ and I just stared at Meryl Streep.” When the interviewer asked her if she wound up meeting Streep, she replied, “Of course not. I just creepily stared at her.”

It’s the end of an era in comic book films as Fox’s X-Men franchise comes to a somber close with the 12th entry, Dark Phoenix, from director Simon Kinberg.
She’s right. You don’t need a degree to be an actor. Even children can do it.
She sounds like a very humble person. She is right to think that acting is a job, it is not life saving or heroic like some actors seem to think. To me, real heroes are the people that are there to ‘save’ or at least help in someway. Please don’t think that I don’t like actors or actresses. But let’s get some perspective. Their jobs are (for the most part) to entertain not saving lives!!!
The movie actor is only part of the entire story mix and the acting skill is an expressive tool. Excuse the simplification but the director, the cinematographer, scriptwriter, casting people, and so on are part of the entire art form and deserve equal celebrity kudu and respect. Movie-making is a story-telling industry and elaborate substitute to your grandma’s bedtime stories. From this view point, acting is not stupid, Jennifer. It’s essential. Good acting, that is.
I think it’s more just a bad choice of words than her actually calling acting stupid. I’d say it’s more the glory and praise and those types of questions and people who can’t keep a level head she feels is stupid.
She does come across as humble, and even admits to being part of the stupidity herself. I think this is a bit of a twist on an otherwise reasonable comment.
Every time she’s quoted in the press, I love her more.
My fav actress now for sure. You hear this and then you have to look at self-important louts like Bill Murray or unhinged people like Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen or wannabe’s like JLo who think being an actor makes then 4 Nobel laureates and Neil Armstrong all in one and just shake your head
Talented, attractive, and humble… I must admit that I’m quite smitten with her.
When you understand how to really act which is to portray reality, truth and real emotion then you are a real actor/actress. If your just a physical actor hired because of your looks or celebrity status and all you do on set is mechanical, fake and “pretending” then yes it is stupid. Acting is a real art form. For to portray the truth and give an incredible unforgettable performance and reach excellence one must humble themselves to the knowledge the incredible amount of knowledge required to reach excellence for what is excellence? Excellence is knowledge plus knowledge plus knowledge. If your stupid or think acting is stupid then youll never reach excellence. It’s easy when directors, script writers, producers, casting directors etc, don’t understand acting and when it calls for real tears they stop the camera and spray your face with water. Then my friends its stupid. Thats the problem with our industry today real acting there for real movies have been almost forgotten. 🙂
Poor choice of words. But I get what she’s saying. It may be stupid, but it’s actually difficult to pick a script that you can do justice to the role. I would feel bad for getting paid millions of dollars and making a movie like Glitter as example that people would waste their hard earned money on. But make a movie like Forest Gump that everyone will remember and bring on an emotional journey is a good thing and difficult to do.
And you people believe she was honest and is not another showbiz product targetted at you. Optimists
I like her more and more.
