Joaquin Phoenix attacks heckler

By Alexandra Heilbron on March 13, 2009 | 43 Comments

Joaquin Phoenix at LIV Nightclub in MiamiActor turned hip-hop singer Joaquin Phoenix angrily jumped offstage at a Miami nightclub early Thursday morning. He was rapping unintelligibly to a deejay beat before noticing a fan heckling him, and announced “We have a f***ing a**hole in the audience! I’ve got a million dollars in my f***ing bank account. What have you got, b****?” The heckler then shouted something back at Joaquin, who replied “Huh?” before dropping his microphone and lunging off the stage at the man. Club security guards witnessed the exchange and it took several moments before they could drag Joaquin away from the man, while the crowd chanted “Joaquin! Joaquin! Joaquin!” The incident may have been a setup, since Casey Affleck, Joaquin’s brother in-law, was conveniently filming the entire scene. Whatever the case may be, Joaquin Phoenix has made quite a name for himself the past few months. After his bizarre interview on Letterman, and now this, he is quickly developing a reputation as one of the wackiest and most unpredictable stars in Hollywood.

I like his wacky antics. It’s refreshing.

  2. Rain • March 13, 2009 @ 8:25 AM

    He’s clearly the Second Coming.

  3. Star • March 13, 2009 @ 8:57 AM

He is smart…an intellect. Always to be confused with “crazy”. He knows exactly what he is doing, and has planned this in his mind for reasons we don’t yet know. He is interesting to say the least.

  4. Anon • March 13, 2009 @ 9:37 AM

Staged!!! Anyone hear of any assault charges? He needed a way of letting everyone know he has a whole million in the bank.

  5. Trixie • March 13, 2009 @ 9:51 AM

When Farrah Fawcett did the same thing on a talk show she was never seen again. Who wants to see crazy. I get enough of that in reality. He’s lucky he’s been so overpaid that he has a million in the bank, wish it were me.

  6. pete • March 13, 2009 @ 9:56 AM

I think all the antics themselves are boring. Since he is having all this “documented” on film, I’m guessing it is some kind of act. Maybe he wants to be the next Andy Kauffman or Borat. Maybe something interesting will eventually come out of it, but for now, it is self indulgent.

  7. Deb • March 13, 2009 @ 10:07 AM

He is doing all this for a “mockumentary” he is making with Casey Affleck. The thing with Letterman was a put-on too. They are filming all of this for the film on hip hop music.

  8. Ron • March 13, 2009 @ 11:04 AM

If its real and I was the guy attacked I’d sue him for his million dollar bank account.

  9. tributegirl • March 13, 2009 @ 1:33 PM

    I sure wish he’d shave.

  10. arridian • March 13, 2009 @ 2:19 PM

    The dude needs a shave.

  11. demigod • March 13, 2009 @ 2:43 PM

Crazy or not, I don’t think he cares how he’s perceived or whether he’s sabotaging his acting career (I know he’s ‘retired’).
Anon, you don’t think the public knows he has AT LEAST a $1mil? There are a lot less intriguing actors.

  12. Audrey • March 13, 2009 @ 3:08 PM

I wish he would use some of his money at the barber’s. He could use a cut and shave. Ewww!!

  13. Nancy • March 13, 2009 @ 3:27 PM

    One word:

    S C H I Z O P H R E N I C !!!!

    (Round 2 anyone?) 😛

  14. demigod • March 13, 2009 @ 3:32 PM

    One word:
    I N S T I G A T O R 🙂

  15. Jo-Anne • March 13, 2009 @ 3:44 PM

    second that, demigod…

Re Joaquin’s behaviour, I think he knows exactly what he’s doing.

  16. Nancy • March 13, 2009 @ 3:47 PM

Awwe, right there to pounce…like Jim once said…”it gets old”. I wasn’t instigating Jo-Anne…it’s called a joke..humour…ever heard of it? Hence the, 😛 I bet if you smiled, your face would crack!!

  17. demigod • March 13, 2009 @ 4:04 PM

You were instigating..you live to argue, it fills a need. But that’s fine, whatever gets you thru the day 🙂

  18. Jo-Anne • March 13, 2009 @ 4:07 PM

Jim said a lot of things Nancy….pay attention…

he was right, it ALL does get old, and the 50 or 60 or 70 of your last days redundant posts attest to that…you are right

hey, you just gave me happy memories using the face crack line my kids used to say to each other, when they were like ten…or was it nine????

  19. Nancy • March 13, 2009 @ 4:46 PM

Actually demigod & Jo-Anne, I WAS joking! You two just seem hell bent on getting an argument going…AGAIN…no surprises! Knock yourselves out!

  20. Juliana • March 13, 2009 @ 4:52 PM

    I love him.

  21. demigod • March 13, 2009 @ 4:59 PM

    I was joking too 🙂

  22. lily • March 13, 2009 @ 7:24 PM

I chuckled over the “round 2” comment, felt a bit dismayed over people taking it the wrong way, but then had another good laugh over “knock yourselves out”. Nancy, you really ARE the queen of metaphors!!!
I like it very much that you seem determined to keep this light-hearted. By the way, I agree that maybe poor Mickey has some kind of mental health problem. Seriously, he seems not quite right.

  23. lily • March 13, 2009 @ 7:25 PM

Sorry, I meant Joaquim, not Mickey. (Though actually, I think he’s a bit messed up too.)

  24. Anon • March 13, 2009 @ 8:55 PM

    demigod on March 13, 2009 2:43 pm

He should have “at least a million” in the bank….he’s been in hollywood for over twenty years! Good grief, Heidi Fleiss came out of Hollywood with more in the bank at the end of her career!

  25. demigod • March 13, 2009 @ 9:14 PM

You misunderstood Anon. Your initial post made it sound like that’s all he had.

  26. Anon • March 13, 2009 @ 9:21 PM

You misunderstood Anon. Your initial post made it sound like thats all he had.

I did mean that. As a matter of fact, I don’t think he even has that.

  27. demigod • March 13, 2009 @ 9:34 PM

Anon, you’re making my head hurt..

  28. nat • March 14, 2009 @ 6:40 AM

all i can say is this is great , im having a great laugh watching this guy, im getting a huge kick out of it, you go Joaquin! this is more entertainment than you’ve given us in the last 5 films you made. for all those who thinks its real, well , that’s just funny. cant wait to see the finished product!

love the screen name demigod, wish i had thought of it myself. you always speak true words.

  29. tributegirl • March 14, 2009 @ 8:26 AM

    lily on March 13, 2009 7:24 pm

    Totally agree, lily!

  30. r0ckst4r • March 14, 2009 @ 11:32 AM

Are people honestly fooled by this? I talk to my friends and some of them actually believe that he’s mentally ill. I mean, come on. Really? He has cameras following him around to these “performances” where he stages ridiculous, attention-seeking antics. The first time, he biffed it pretty hard on the stage. And this time he “attacks” a heckler. Judging by the fact that this “heckler” has yet to press charges, it seems like one big set-up. And I have to say that I can’t wait to see the footage that Casey Affleck is filming 😀

  31. mandee • March 14, 2009 @ 3:57 PM

hmm, and everyone criticized the doctor who never treated him for calling him crazy? lol. im guessing defending joaquin was pretty “PREMATURE” ?? 🙂

  32. Barb • March 14, 2009 @ 8:46 PM

He’s pulling off a “Britney”. LMAO! She paved the way on that… he’s just doing what she did for publicity.

  33. Jo-Anne. • March 15, 2009 @ 4:44 PM

r0ckst4r, you make some very good points there and I’m right behind you to view Casey’s footage. same to you, nat, agree wit your comments as well, this is just too far fetched to seem real…

  34. demigod • March 15, 2009 @ 10:50 PM

nat, I’ve used that screen name on other sites over the years, and it’s funny how some get the impression I’m some egomaniac with a messiah complex lol I’ts just a name.
Yes, I can be brutally honest. I don’t care who I offend. I’m all about the truth.

  35. Carmie • March 15, 2009 @ 11:25 PM

Instead of mentioning his millions publicly maybe he can send some of it to Africa instead of looking for attention…how pathetic!!!!

  36. Biron • March 16, 2009 @ 12:05 PM

Another crazy overpaid sucker who can’t even act let alone rap, goes berzerk on stage. NICE! Maybe he should use his million to buy a brain. Are we supposed to be impressed by this crap? Go home Joaquin ya looser!

  37. nat • March 16, 2009 @ 1:37 PM

really demigod ?, i never got that impression of you i always thought you spoke the truth and i do the same so i respect it, never back now. (unless you say stupid shit LOL)! yeah i know its a screen name but a very cool one.

  38. Jo-Anne. • March 16, 2009 @ 2:38 PM

Biron, what is “crazy” is your comment
    “who can’t even act”…

    to each his own…

  39. Anon • March 16, 2009 @ 5:34 PM

    Biron on March 16, 2009 12:05 pm

Completely agree with you there. He definitely cant act and as for the comments about that whole million he has in the bank. Lol I think not! Anyone that NEEDS to make that proclamation definitely has nada dime to his name. I say, looser go home as well!

  40. Justine • March 16, 2009 @ 8:11 PM

He can’t act? How many Oscars has he been nominated for? At least two. I think he’s hilarious. I was roflol when he dropped the mic and jumped off the stage. Mucho gusto!

  41. demigod • March 17, 2009 @ 3:23 AM

Anon, I don’t know where you’re coming from..

  42. CaptKnockemBack • March 21, 2009 @ 6:41 PM

    That was no Axl Rose

  43. coffee • March 29, 2009 @ 2:00 PM

i wouldnt be surprised if that scuffle was staged, but Joaquin Phoenixs has an interesting sense of humor in any case
