Rising star Margot Robbie has been cast in yet another high-profile flick, and this time she’ll be lacing up her skates for the role.
The Whiskey Tango Foxtrot actress is officially starring as disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding in the upcoming biopic I, Tonya.
A rep for the film’s screenwriter Steven Rogers (who penned the movies Hope Floats and P.S. I Love You) confirmed the casting news this morning.
The 25-year-old actress, who’s also starring in the upcoming The Legend of Tarzan and Suicide Squad this summer, will have quite a task ahead of her in depicting one of the most shocking scandals in U.S. sports history.
In January 1994, Tonya Harding shifted from being one of the most successful figure skaters in the world to the most infamous after her ex-husband, Jeff Gilooly, hired someone to break fellow figure skater and main competitor Nancy Kerrigan’s right leg at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Due to her injuries, Kerrigan was forced to withdraw from the U.S. Championships but recovered in time to compete at the 1994 Winter Olympics just seven weeks later.
Harding, who won the U.S. Championship, eventually pleaded guilty to helping to conspire to hinder prosecution in the attack and was subsequently stripped of her win and banned from the U.S. Figure Skating Association for life.
A release date for I, Tonya has not yet been announced, but Bryan Unkeless (of The Hunger Games) and his Clubhouse Pictures will produce alongside Margot and her LuckyChap Entertainment. ~Shelby Morton
