Mark Hamill thought he’d never be in Star Wars again

Mark HamillThe internet exploded when news hit that Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were returning to the Star Wars franchise, but for a long time the actors were sure that was never going to happen. “Part of the experience of [Star Wars] in my life was coming down from that, putting it behind me. We had a beginning, middle, and an end. And I certainly, in a million years, never expected to return,” Mark Hamill told Entertainment Weekly. “George [Lucas] had told us that he wasn’t going to do them many, many years ago — but times and circumstances change.”

Fast forward to 2012 when Walt Disney Co. bought the Star Wars franchise for a whopping $4 billion. Now all three actors are reprising their roles for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Mark says he’s not taking anything for granted. “It’s kind of like Scrooge on Christmas morning. ‘Oh my God, this time I’m going to appreciate it in a way I wasn’t able to as a young man,'” he explained. “We knew it was special, but [returning for the new trilogy] reminded me of taking out a pair of trousers from the back of the closet and discovering a $20 bill in the pocket.”

One aspect of filming Mark’s not crazy about? The beard. “I’m not really a beard person,” he admit. “Every time you take a sip of coffee… Ugh, you’re always getting food and drink in it.” ~Kelly Townsend
