Michael Douglas may lose voice

Michael Douglas could lose his voice after undergoing treatment for throat cancer, doctors say. The 65-year-old actor was diagnosed with the disease earlier this week after medical staff discovered tumors in his throat. The growths were detected early and Michael is expected to make a full recovery. He has said he is “very optimistic” about his outlook and may begin treatment as early as this week in New York, including eight weeks of intensive radiation and chemotherapy. Doctors hope they will not have to conduct any surgery on the larynx – which may affect Michael’s ability to speak. A partial or complete laryngectomy could change the sound of the star’s voice or leave him unable to talk at all. Dr. Kenneth Hu, co-director of the Head And Neck Institute at Beth Israel Medical Centre in New York, believes smoking caused the cancer but he remains confident the actor can be treated successfully. “I think the fact that he’s getting radiation means it’s curable. It tells you that it’s probably an intermediate stage cancer,” Hu said.

I hope he recovers soon from this. It must be scary for that to happen.

its a shame this sort of thing happened but he has some excellent medical care available to him so I am sure he’ll be fine. Wish him all the best and hope he makes a full recovery.

i hope he makes a speedy and fully recovery. i know how terrifying it is to have family either think they have cancer, or actually have it. i hope his family has all the support they need to pull through this.

He was in a movie once about running NYC marathon, You’d think portraying a runner (Running in 1979) would have helped him stop smoking. But ce la vie, he’s got a lot to live for but also must live with past decisions. I hope he makes a full recovery and can lead by example the dangers of smoking and continue to make great movies. I will be watching Wall Street 2!

totally disagree with the doc’s statement “I think the fact he’s getting radiation means it’s curable”….I believe radiation is given to many at a terrible cost to their quality of life which in many cases ends brutally and abruptly…..they truly PAID…

sorry to hear of his illness, sorrier to hear it may have been caused/contributed by smoking….
