Matt Garetty, Andrew Detmer, & Steve Montgomery – Chronicle (2012)

Josh Trank's breakout 2012 film Chronicle was yet another film looking to take the superhero genre in a different direction, before shared universes became a thing. Trank and writer Max Landis took the concept of a superhero origins film and combined it with the narrative tool of a found footage film to create a wholly unique experience that saw three teens played by Alex Russell, Dane DeHaan and Michael B. Jordan discover an alien object that gives them superpowers. As one of them succumbs to the corruption of power, the others rise to try and save their friends before it ends in tragedy. While nothing inherently new from a writing perspective, the visual presentation and its strong cast make for a compelling film.
