Dressed to Kill (1980)

When it comes to trans representation in film, there have been huge strides made in the last decade, but before that there were only a handful of films that stood out positively. Boys Don’t Cry and The Crying Game come to mind with positive representation in contrast to negative stereotypes in other movies. Films like Crocodile Dundee and the aforementioned Ace Ventura: Pet Detective played it for laughs, with the latter also insinuating the transition as a by-product of a mental breakdown, which was also the case in Dressed to Kill. This film sees its psychiatrist lead—played by Michael Caine—murder his female patients under the guise of his female alter ego, furthering the idea that transitioning, or those in the trans community, are a result of mental disorders.
