The Toy (1982)

Another '80s entry that isn't looked back upon kindly is this 1982 Richard Pryor film. It's mind-boggling to think that this film even made it to theaters with how it trivializes the concept of slavery for what is supposed to be a children's comedy. So how did they do it? Well, the film centers around an underemployed reporter played by Pryor, who winds up being purchased by a rich spoiled kid to be his personal toy. As much as this was a product of its time, it's baffling that most critics' focus on the film was about how poor a remake it was of the French film Le Jouet (in which the man in question was white), rather than the idea of a rich white child purchasing a black man.
