Independence Day (1996)/Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) – 20 years

As one of the defining movies of the '90s and a seminal film for actor Will Smith, the decision to return to the iconic film was a bit of an odd one. It was made even more questionable when they weren’t able to secure the return of Will Smith for the sequel. Smith had priced himself out of range and although the sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence, featured more breathtaking set pieces, it also lacked the energy and charisma that Smith brought to the original. The 20-year gap also didn’t do the film any favors as the film suffered at the box office without Smith’s star power.
