Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017) – $620.2M

Following up on the successes of The Force Awakens and Rogue One, Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi was one of 2017’s most anticipated films, especially following its provocative trailers and subtitle. Its critical success also added to the anticipation of the film, but what many didn’t see coming was ultimately how divisive the sequel would turn out to be with the fan base, forever changing the direction Disney would decide to take the franchise in moving forward. The negativity surrounding The Last Jedi would ultimately carry over to the Solo spin-off film. It also led to Boba Fett’s cancellation, while Rian Johnson’s status with Lucasfilm would be up in the air, putting his planned trilogy in limbo. Combined with Carrie Fisher’s sudden death the prior year and Colin Trevorrow’s removal from Episode IX, what seemed like a bright future under Disney quickly turned sour in spite of its strong performance at the box office ($620.2 million domestically and $1.3 billion worldwide).
