The Lion King (2019) – $543.6M

Disney had a big year in 2019 and Jon Favreau’s The Lion King was a big piece of that. The last of three live-action remakes, following Tim Burton’s Dumbo and Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin, The Lion King was easily the most anticipated of the three, thanks to its star-studded cast and the original film’s beloved status, which was reinforced by its 3D re-release earlier in the decade. Even as critics were mixed on the film and its status as “live-action” was dubious at best, The Lion King still proved to be a massive hit, debuting to over $191 million and ultimately finishing with over $543.6 million domestically. Both numbers surpassed the high bar set by Beauty and the Beast, and its $1.7 billion worldwide gross would place it seventh highest all time.
