John Cho as David Kim – Searching (2018)

Previously used in comedic or supporting roles, it was fantastic to see John Cho finally get a leading dramatic role in Searching. The film follows David Kim's search for his daughter after she mysteriously disappears. Cho's dramatic talents would be put in even more focus with this film, given its unique presentation as a movie told entirely through computer and phone screens. With such limiting framing devices, the strength of this film was entirely dependent on Cho, and he delivers his best performance to date. While the film is full of the typical trappings and tropes of mystery films, Searching does make best use of those elements to subvert your expectations. Additionally, the film is worth multiple viewings for all the visual clues presented throughout.
