Sean Penn has become known for his political and social activism but it’s that very reputation that landed him in hot water when he ran into former costar Maria Conchita Alonso this past weekend at a Los Angeles airport. According to Alonso, she saw Penn and confronted him about his outward support of socialist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, which sparked a screaming match in front of shocked spectators. Alonso dished details of the incident to the New York Post: “I said, ‘You are a communist, Sean Penn.’ He said, ‘You are a pig!’ So I said, ‘And you are a communist asshole! Is it great to live the way you do as a communist?'” This isn’t he first time we’re hearing of tension between the pair. Last year Alonso published an open letter to Penn branding him a hypocrite and accusing him of supporting Chavez’s human-rights violations.
Penn told the New York Post that at first he didn’t realize who the woman at the airport was. “I only knew that a hostile woman was nonsensically berating me,” said the actor. “I think I worked with her once. But she looks really different. She was uninformed and impolite to all the other passengers.” The pair in fact starred together in the 1988 film Colors but Alonso says it’s now hard to watch a film that he’s in. She apologized in a radio interview for calling him an asshole but still maintains that the actor is a communist.
