Originally from Reseda, California, Martin Donovan studied acting at Los Angeles Pierce College and the American Theater of Arts in Los Angeles before moving to New York in 1983, where he made his feature film debut as Josh in Hard Choices (1985) after first making a guest appearance on the ABC TV drama series King's Crossing in 1982.
He went on to play Detective Rogen in the 1987 mini-series At Mother's Request. Since then, he has played roles in over 50 films and ha been a regular on numerous series, including Wonderland, Pasadena, Weeds, Ghost Whisperer and Rogue. He is also an accomplished stage actor.
In 2012, Martin put on the director's cap for the first time with the comedy Collaborator. He also starred in the film. He played the role of Mitchell Carson in Ant-Man (2015) and Jack Lanahan in the Canadian feature film Indian Horse (2018). Later, he appeared alongside Milo Ventimiglia and Amanda Seyfried in the drama The Art of Racing in the Rain (2019).
His most recent film is Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated Tenet (2020), an espionage thriller based on the concept of time inversion. He stars alongside John David Washington, Elizabeth Debicki and Robert Pattinson.
Martin has been married to actress Vivian Lanko since 1984. They have two children. They currently live in Vancouver, Canada.
